Resident Scholar's Program
The
Ancient Library of Alexandria was famed for a host of its
distinguished academic traditions, which the then Ptolemaic rulers,
founders of the Library, were keen on preserving and privileging.
Inviting scholars of world renown and high erudition was one of
these traditions: scholars were invited to stay inside the Library
for a period of time during which they can proceed with their
experimental or intellectual enterprises, as well as transferring
their knowledge, expertise and wisdom to younger generations of
students. Traditions such as these helped constitute an appreciation
of the true value of knowledge and its dissemination, and also
helped create the indelible glory of the ancient Library – the
ancient world's beacon of thought and knowledge.
Following such traditions, the Manuscript Centre at the Bibliotheca
Alexandrina prides itself in adopting the Resident Scholar's Program
(henceforth: RSP). The program aims at inviting accomplished
heritage scholars from all over the world to stay at the Bibliotheca
Alexandrina for a period of time during which the invited scholars
meet heritage specialists and academics from Egypt. This interaction
insures a dynamic milieu of research and a conservation of
established traditions of academia. During their stay (no less than
two weeks), RSP's participants will deliver a number of lectures in
their assorted fields of knowledge, and the lectures will be
documented, and will be available to the public on CDs.
Invitations to RSP have been delivered to a host of the world's
leading heritage scholars. A number of responses have been received
making the announcement of the launching of the program possible in
2006. The opening episodes of the program will consist of Roshdi
Rashed (France), Ramazan Sesen (Turkey), Abdul Hamid Sabra (USA),
A.Sh. Benbin (Morocco) and Gothard Stromaier (Germany).
Further details of the program will be announced before due time to
achieve the best benefit for those concerned with the visitor's
fields of specialization.
