Maps
In the
Exhibition Gallery figures a rare collection of thirteen old maps of
Alexandria in particular and Egypt in general. The oldest maps go
back to the 15th and 16th centuries, and most of them are extracts
from old books dating back to the same period. In Latin
transcriptions they portray Lower, Central Egypt, the valley of the
Nile as well as other topographical features. Some maps refer to
neighboring countries such as Palestine and Libya. The other maps
depict Alexandria in the 18th and 19th centuries: the port, streets,
alleys, mosques in addition to the military operations between the
British and the French armies in 1801. Most of the Alexandrian maps
were executed by Egyptian officers and engineers upon the Khedive
orders.
