al-Rāzī is one of the pre-eminent figures that
illuminated the Arab Islamic- or rather human- history of science. He was
particularly known for his scientific methodology, having founded
medicine upon clinical examination rather then theoretical studies. The
libraries of Alexandria hold a vast array of al-Rāzī’s manuscripts; yet
being the oldest medical manuscript in Alexandria Maqāla fī al-Naqras-
‘Treatise on Gout’ maintains a remarkable position amongst the medical
and pharmaceutical manuscripts in these libraries. The Arabic text of the
manuscript which is published herewith, for the first time to the best of
our knowledge, is not an authenticated text according to the rules of
authentication of heritage texts, but rather an informative pamphlet
aiming to reveal an important page in the history of Arabic medicine, or
rather world medicine in general. It bears English, French, and German
translations of the manuscript. The book in hand is the second episode in
the BA’s multilingual publishing heritage.
