International conference entitled "The Suez Canal: Cities Born in the Desert"
The
Manuscript Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina organizes the
international conference entitled "The Suez Canal: Cities Born in
the Desert" jointly with the General Authority of the Suez Canal and
l'Association des Amies de Ferdinand De Lesseps, to be held on
12/12/2005- 13/12-2005 at the BA conference Center. The conference
focuses on the origins and development of the cities on the Suez
Canal from urban, economic and cultural perspectives. It also
reviews the techniques employed during the Canal excavation from the
second half of the nineteenth century down to the present extension
and development to rally with the increasing progress of the
international navigation. Furthermore, some sessions cast light on
the vital role of the Canal in the Egyptian economy: through its
direct revenue or the economic activities of its major cities such
as Port Said, Ismailiyya and Suez.
